This one sits right up against the mountain in Gordon's Bay, on a site that had to be made before it could be built on. Before there was anything to build on we had to cut into the slope, and a good part of that cut came out as rock.

It is a triple storey coming in at 440 square metres. The bay side of the house is mostly glass, with massive doors that open onto the ocean and the lights of the city across the water. That view is the whole reason the house sits where it does.

The slabs are cast in situ rather than dropped in precast. On a mountain site we would rather pour it ourselves and know exactly what is under the floor. It takes longer and it lasts.

There is a dumbwaiter running between the floors as well. Three storeys is a long way to carry a tray of dishes or a basket of washing, and the owners will not have to.

Still busy on this one. We will keep the photos coming as she goes up.

What made this one interesting

Deep excavationMetres of cut into the slope, much of it rock, before the first footing could go in.
In-situ concrete slabsCast on site rather than delivered. On ground like this we want to know exactly what is under the floor.
Massive doors to the viewThe bay side opens almost completely. Ocean and city lights from every level.
Hard against the mountainFynbos at the back door. Access and a lay-down area had to be sorted before anything else could start.
A dumbwaiter between the floorsA small service lift running through the house, so dishes and laundry do not get carried up and down three storeys.
