House de Stadler

This one is in Betty's Bay, and it is an addition to a house that is already standing. The owners are getting older, and a house you have to climb through every day stops being a pleasure fairly quickly. So rather than build up, we are building down.

The new part goes in lower on the slope and stays attached to the existing house. One home, lived in as one home, with far less climbing in it. Just under 200 square metres.

The roof is concrete. The floors are concrete too, finished and left exposed rather than covered over. The windows and doors are tall on purpose, because the reason anyone builds on this stretch of coast is what they can see from it.

Betty's Bay is granite. It is not ground you simply cut through. It is boulders, and they have to be broken and moved before anything can be founded on the site. That was most of the earthworks here, and it is the part that catches people out on this coast.

We work around the fynbos where we can. Once it has been taken off a site it does not come back in a hurry.
